Two Types of OPT

Choose the right type for your situation — timing is everything.

Pre-Completion OPT

Before Graduation

Work before your program end date, while still enrolled
Limited to 20 hours per week during academic terms
Full-time (40 hrs/week) allowed during official school breaks
Time used counts against your 12-month post-completion total
Must be directly related to your field of study

Process

How to Apply, Step by Step

The OPT application goes through your school before it ever reaches USCIS. Start early.

Meet Your DSO and Request OPT Recommendation

Schedule an appointment with your Designated School Official (DSO) at the international students office. Tell them you want to apply for post-completion OPT. They will review your eligibility — full-time enrollment, status compliance, no more than 12 months of CPT — and create a formal OPT recommendation in SEVIS.

Timeline: start 3–5 months before graduation

DSO Updates SEVIS & Issues New I-20

Once your DSO approves the recommendation, they update your SEVIS record and issue you a new I-20 with the OPT recommendation page. This document is required for your USCIS filing. Check that all dates and your name are correct before leaving their office — errors take time to correct.

File Form I-765 Online with USCIS

Go to uscis.gov and file Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization). Submit your new I-20, passport copy, most recent visa stamp, copies of all prior I-20s, and two passport photos. You can request a specific OPT start date. The application window opens 90 days before your program end date and closes 60 days after.

Receive Your EAD Card and Start Working

USCIS will mail your Employment Authorization Document (EAD card) to the address listed on your I-765. You cannot legally work until you have the physical card in hand and your OPT start date has passed. Show your EAD to your employer for Form I-9 verification. Keep it safe — replacement takes months.

Critical Rules

The 90-Day Unemployment Limit

This is the rule that trips most OPT students up. Know it cold.

Warning

You are allowed no more than 90 cumulative days of unemployment during your standard OPT period. If you receive an approved STEM extension, you get an additional 60 days of unemployment tolerance — 150 days total across the full OPT period.

These days accumulate the moment your OPT start date passes — even if your EAD card hasn't arrived yet. Day counting does not pause. If you hit 90 days without qualifying employment, you are considered out of status and must depart the US.

Qualifying STEM Degrees

Your degree must appear on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List — a list of CIP codes. Most engineering, computer science, mathematics, biology, physics, chemistry, and statistics degrees qualify. Business degrees generally do not unless they carry a specific quantitative focus on the list.

Employer Requirements

Your employer must be enrolled in the E-Verify system and in good standing — no debarments or sanctions. You can check their participation at e-verify.uscis.gov. E-Verify enrollment alone does not mean the company supports your OPT; you still need their active cooperation for the I-983 training plan and the required annual evaluation submissions.

Form I-983 Training Plan

The I-983 is a formal training plan outlining how your job directly connects to your STEM degree. Both you and a company official with signing authority must complete and sign it. Employers must submit formal evaluations at the 12-month and 24-month marks, which you co-sign. Your DSO must submit the I-983 to SEVIS before you can file Form I-765 for the extension.

File no later than your OPT end date — the window opens 90 days before. You can file the STEM extension as early as 90 days before your OPT end date. The actual deadline is before your current OPT EAD expires — missing that deadline means you cannot get the extension. Also note: any gap in employer reporting to SEVIS exceeding 5 business days after your departure from an employer can trigger automatic STEM OPT termination. Coordinate with your employer to stay current, and report job changes to your DSO within 10 days.

Apply early — 3 to 5 months before graduation

USCIS processing times fluctuate wildly. Students who apply right at the 90-day window often receive their EAD card after their intended start date. Apply as early as USCIS allows to protect your requested start date.

Track your unemployment days from Day 1

Maintain a personal log of every day of employment and unemployment on OPT. Your DSO will not track this for you. A simple weekly spreadsheet is enough. If you approach 60 days without employment, take action immediately.

Report job changes to your DSO within 10 days

Any time you start a new job, change employers, or change your role significantly, notify your DSO within 10 days. They will update your SEVIS record. Failing to report is a status violation even if you are otherwise employed and working legally.

Never begin work without a valid EAD in hand

Working before receiving your EAD — even a single day, even at a company that extended you an offer — is unauthorized employment. This is one of the most serious immigration violations and can result in a permanent bar from the US.

File STEM extension 90 days before OPT ends

Mark the countdown on Day 1 of OPT. Begin coordinating with your employer on the I-983 immediately after receiving your EAD — employer paperwork delays are the most common reason students miss the STEM deadline.

What OPT Does Not Cover

Self-employment and sole proprietorships You cannot use OPT to run your own business as the primary owner. Some limited consulting is permitted with explicit DSO guidance and approval.
Jobs unrelated to your field of study Working in a role unrelated to your degree does not count as valid OPT employment. Those days accumulate as unemployment against your 90-day limit.
Unpaid volunteer work (in most cases) Unpaid positions only count as OPT employment in narrow circumstances where unpaid internships are the established norm in your field and explicitly DSO-approved.
Debarred or sanctioned employers If USCIS or DOL has debarred your employer from immigration programs, your employment there does not count — even if you had no knowledge of the debarment.

Common OPT Questions

Can I work part-time on OPT?

For post-completion OPT, you must work at least 20 hours per week to be considered “employed.” Working fewer hours counts as unemployment. There is no upper cap — full-time and overtime are both permitted as long as your employer allows it.

What if my EAD card arrives late?

Days from your requested OPT start date to the day your EAD card physically arrives still count as unemployment. This is why applying early is non-negotiable. If USCIS processing is severely delayed, contact your DSO immediately — they may be able to request a start date adjustment.

Can I travel outside the US on OPT?

Yes, but carefully. You need a valid passport, unexpired visa stamp, your EAD card, and an employment verification letter to re-enter the US. Days spent outside the US do not count as unemployment days, but extended absences without active employment can complicate your re-entry.
